For official Use Also

We received an e-mailed letter from Lyn Sato, a Maasinhon working in Cebu City, complaining about the illegal use of government vehicles by government officials here.

She says she regularly sees red plated vehicles dropping kids to school and picking them up, and in the beach resorts of the city, and along the notorious “slaughter house” video-bars near the city police station. Miss Sato claims there is a law that requires every government vehicle to have the name of the agency it belongs to painted on its sides with the sign “For Official Use Only!”

She’s right of course, but hey, this is the Banana Republic of the Philippines we’re talking about - not Singapore.

Victor Claims They’ll Win!

Engineer Victor Lerias wrote us to refute claims they won’t win in the coming election because they have no money and no strong grass root organization.

He believes the people want good governance and not the “Magindanao” type of leadership he claims we have today. The problem with Lerias’s argument is that they didn’t really do much during their 9 years in power.

Enage’s Transfer Denied

There are unconfirmed reports that the request of Boyet Enage who has been detained in a drug related case to be transferred to the Provincial Jail has been denied.

From what we know, such requests are left to the discretion of the Judge who is handling the case. However the city jail is so congested, with as many as 14 detainees in a cell the size of a small kitchen. While the Provincial Jail is much larger, cleaner and better managed.

Searching For Butch Bugalay

We have an e-mailed letter from Danny Suyman thanking us for the new SLT Website format which he appreciates very much. Since he didn’t say where he was writing from we assume he is abroad and hasn’t been to Maasin for some time.

Danny wants to know if we could help him locate his high school friend Butch Bagulay. If any of our readers know where he is, please e-mail Danny Suyman (see Feedback) ASAP.

SLT Office Robbed

The SLT Editorial Office was robbed last Friday of a still undetermined amount of money and the cell phone of its Japanese correspondent Angie “San” Book.

The suspect whose name we gave to city police officer Paloma has already been “invited” for questioning at their headquarters in Barangay Tagnipa.

Welcome Brontispa Longissima

City officials who were hoping they would spare the province were surprised to learn that the dreaded Brontispa Longissima; the ravenous coconut eating beetle had arrived and were now feasting on the fronds of dozens of coconut trees in Barangay Paskuhan, Maasin City. Residents there claim the beetles had actually arrived on Christmas Day. According to PCA Provincial Director Manuel Sembrano the beetles had probably hitched a ride on delivery trucks from Ormoc City. He said they were now treating the infected trees with “Karate” an insecticide which environmentalist claim turns the coconuts toxic for months.
