The Man & The Whale

There is a time in one’s life when a single event can drastically alter the course he is heading for.
In Pastor Ernesto Faliccio’s case it was for the better.
Ernesto who is now a keeper and protector of whalesharks was once one of its most dreaded enemy.
Faliccio who was a former whaleshark hunter, saw the right path and was converted after experiencing an almost deadly experience in the waters off the coast of Pintuyan town.
Ernesto had lined up a buyer from Bohol for the tiki-tiki he caught. For the catch he was going to get around 5,000 pesos from the buyer for each whaleshark caught and delivered.
He then proceeded to the part of sea which the Whalesharks usually frequented. After a few hours of waiting he saw a school of whalesharks.
After nearing one, he drove his harpoon deep into the back of one of the giant creatures when he heard something snap.
Before he knew what had happend it was to late, the line holding the shark and the boat got wrapped around Ernestos leg and just like Captain Ahab in Moby Dick he was dragged into the sea by the whaleshark.
Accepting his fate he said a final prayer to God to spare his life. Suddenly the rope loosened and he found himself floating towards the surface of the water to safety.
The incident gave him a new found respect towards nature and all its inhabitants. Now Ernesto has and a new calling in life and that is to protect the world’s largest fish.

The peoples organization which is based in Barangay Son-Ok in Pintuyan town can help you with your Whaleshark sighting needs. Contact cell phone numbers 09264477382 or 09269616814 for more details.

MAASIN CITY - The annual Sakay-Sakay celebration this year which will feature the Banca, Pump Boat, Icon Decoration and Street Dancing and Higante competitions will be offering prize money totalling P142,000 pesos for the winners. The Sakay-Sakay event was the brain child of City Councilor Nestor Sy who wanted to show the country that the Sakay-Sakay event started in Southern Leyte and not Cebu which only recently claimed the event started there. Although the record could be contested by others who were born at home or other health facilities in the province - baby January Garces is the current "Baby of the Year of the Tiger." The other New Year baby who was born at the Provincial Hospital was Chesedh Jabez Bug-atan.
Chen Glendy who is from Mantahan, Maasin City is the daughter of Glenn and Charmy Peligro. While Chesedh Jabez Bug-atan is the daughter of Richard and Marilyn Bug-atan of Barangay Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Southern Leyte
In a related development, IPHO Director Dr. Joselito Trumata, told SLT that there had been only one fire cracker victim on New Year's Eve and he wasn't even from Southern Leyte.
He said the lone casualty was Joel Flores of Libagon, Mandaue City, Cebu who almost blew his fingers off with a "Super Lolo" fire cracker. (By ANGIE BOOK)
