MANILA - A business man from Sogod, Southern Leyte has added a new attraction to his thriving rice and Tilapia farms. Benjamin Gerona Jr. is now raising giant freshwater prawns locally known as ulang, or uwang, a fresh water prawn with a huge potential market.
Gerona who manages a recreation farm and charges entrance fee to clients who want to buy and catch their own tilapia has added ulang as one of his farm’s attractions. Part of his property is planted to rice and ornamental plants. While the rest is used for his tilapia and ulang enterprises.
Gerona’s agri-fisheries farm is located in Barangay Buac Gamay, Sogod, Southern Leyte near the Bontoc Farmers Information and Service center. His ulang business is being assisted by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development’s (PCARRD) Techno Gabay Program.
Gerona said his 300-square meter ulang pond has earned him a profit of P7,235 in just six months.
