Young Mercado delivers first SOCA

March 25 - 31, 2017

MAASIN CITY - “Maasin, uswag pa more!” was the mantra of newly elected city mayor, Nacional Verano Mercado, as he delivered his first state of the city address (SOCA) to an assembly of city hall officials and employees, and barangay officials last March 28 at the city gymnasium.

Mercado in his speech expressed his plan to help city hall bag the Seal of Good Local Governance and for the city to rank higher in the Cities and Municipalities Competitive Index.

The mayor reported that Maasin which is classified as a fourth-class city, passed the DILG’s criteria of Financial Administration, Business- Friendliness & Competitiveness, Peace & Order, and Environmental Management.

Mercado added that during his administration, he promises to implement various infrastructure projects which include the changing of the wooden bridge in barangay Combado, the construction of a school clinic in barangay Lunas, of evacuation facilities, of a new Maasin Van terminal, a community fish landing, and free Wi-Fi in public places.

During the presscon the young mayor highlighted big city projects which included a new reclamation project in barangay Combado, a new wet market, and that he will support the proposed coastal road.

A second generation politician, Mercado is a hotel and restaurant management graduate of De La Salle- College of Saint Benilde, and is the eldest son of Southern Leyte congressman Roger Mercado and nephew of governor Damian Mercado.(By MARK L. RIMAS)
