Water Crisis To End Soon

MAASIN CITY – The worst water shortage in the city’s history is finally coming to an end with the installation of four huge water pumps in the Maasin Water Districts reservoirs in barangays Nasaug and Batuan. Costing a total of 1.5 million pesos the pumps will soon provide water to MWD city consumers on a 24 hour basis.

In an exclusive interview with the Southern Leyte Times MWD Engineer Conrado Tabasa its Technical Division Chief said the modern pumps were carefully installed to ensure they do not malfunction and that the water pipes could handle the pressure.

The MWD management has been criticized lately for failing to reduce its water wastage due to leaks in its water pipes, faulty water meters and illegal connections which MWD admitted accounted for 50 percent of its water wastage.

Tabasa however said they would still need the financial assistance of the city and provincial government to modernize its services otherwise it would have no recourse but to increase its water rates. (By NOEME MONTALBO)
