VSU Hits Strip Mining

BAYBAY CITY - Mining companies and environmentalist are again headed for a show down with the influx of over 200 mining exploration applications covering the six provinces of the region including the three Pacific towns of Silago, Hinundayan and Hinunangan in Southern Leyte.

In Bay-bay City the president of the Visayas State University led a signature campaign saying “no” to the mining exploration request of the Strong Built Mining Development Corporation.

The company seeks to explore several thousands hectares of forestland on the famed Mount Pangasugan which is Leyte’s top watershed and has virgin forests that is home to over a thousand species of flora and fauna.

VSU lies at the foot of Mount Pangasugan and would be directly affected if mining operations are conducted on the mountain. Doctor Bacusmo said that mining exploration there would destroy the forest, the VSU campus and low-lying barangays. (By: MARK RIMAS)
