St. Bernard bags 2009 National Search for Barangays with Best Sanitary Practice Award

Maasin City, Southern Leyte (2 February) -- Barangay Malibago, of the municipality of St. Bernard won another significant award, the 2009 National Search for Barangays with Best Sanitary Practice, Municipal Disaster Coordinating Council (MDCC) Public Information chairman Rosalinda Araneta reported to PIA.

Over the years, the municipality of Saint Bernard has garnered for itself various national awards for the effective implementation of its programs and projects under the leadership of Mayor Rico Rentuza, Araneta disclosed in her report.

In 2009 alone, the town was awarded the Gawad Kalasag Award for Best Disaster Coordinating Council as 3rd placer and Grand Winner in 2008; and 2nd place in DOT-ATOP Best Tourism Practice Festival Category for the Umadagat Festival.

Barangay Malibago, one of the 30 barangays in St. Bernard located along the coastal area, took the challenge and presented an entry for the said search for the regional level category, Municipal Tourism Officer Araneta narrated. Fortunately, the barangay won in the regional search with P150,000 prize money and was the regional entry for the 2009 national search that bagged the grand prize which took home P200,000 cash prize and a plaque.

Araneta said that it bested 30 other regional entries throughout the country. The winners were adjudged the following criteria: Toilet per household; accessibility to safe and drinking water; solid waste segregation; and clean and green surroundings, she added.

The awarding ceremonies held January 29, 2010 at Hotel Softiel Philippines Plaza, at CCP Complex was received by Mayor Rentuza, Municipal Health Officer Dr. Freddie J. Letigio, Malibago Barangay Secretary Estemia Barce and Mrs. Marlin Brua. (By R.G. Cadavos PIA-soleyte)
