Southern Leyteño Killed in Gold Mine

ITOGON, Benguet — The Cordillera Administrative Region office of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau ordered the immediate closing of the mine tunnels of Benguet Corporation in Barangay Luneta here following the death of three pocket miners who entered the abandoned mine tunnels the past two weeks.

The immediate closure of the mine portals came after Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Joracion Ramos ordered the MGB to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of the small time miners who were trapped inside the abandoned tunnel.

The Itogon municipal police station identified the fatalities as Rolly Gilles, 40 who is a native of Limasawa Island, Southern Leyte and Jojo Ramirez, 24, a native of Mabini, Pangasinan; Edgar Sucalo, 36, a pocket miner who hails from Pozorrubio, Pangasinan.

Authorities claim the three individuals were trapped inside the tunnel after its retaining wall was washed away by rushing waters of a nearby river.
