SOGOD MAYORS NEED 2M TO COMBAT CROWN OF THORNS

SOGOD — Mayors from the Sogod Bay area are seeking financial support for their battle against the deadly crown-of-thorns starfish which are devouring the coral polyps of Sogod Bay.

Eva Abad who heads the Coastal Fisheries Resources Management unit of Southern Leyte's Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Management Office (PENRMO) said they needed at least P2 million to contain the poisoned tipped starfish which had already devoured over 200 hectares of corals along the bay and have already infested the world famous dive sites of Limasawa Island.

She said the Sogod Bay Sustainable Marine Management Alliance (SBSMMA) has proposed that each town allocate a portion of their calamity funds for the extraction of the starfish.

"The invasion of the starfish could be considered a major local disaster which would eventually kill the province's aqua- tourism industry and threaten its fishing industry as well," Abad said.
