Shorter Coastal Road Feasible

March 25 - 31, 2017

MAASIN CITY - The proposed 4.71 kilometer coastal road which was originally planned to traverse the shorelines of barangay Lib-og and barangay Mambajao is now expected to get significantly shorter as city officials reveal that the planned road will go through only five coastal barangays.

This development was revealed during the Open Public Forum on Maasin City’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan, last March 30, at the Liga ng mga Barangay Conference Hall in Barangay Combado.

According to City Planning and Development Officer Engr. Othello Rich, the coastal road will only link barangays Tagnipa and Tunga-tunga to decongest the traffic and protect the people and residences from possible storm surges.

The project is being opposed by environmentalist and fisherfolk groups as the original plan would significantly affect the existing Mangrove Forests and Coral formations in barangays Libog and Combado.

Rich further explained that the planned coastal road will now only traverse the five barangays (Tagnipa, Tunga-Tunga, Abgao, Mantahan and Mambajao) in order to help conserve the mangrove forest found in barangays Lib-og and Combado.

The city officials said that the only thing to be affected would be the public white sand beach along Espina Boulevard and behind city hall.(By MARK L. RIMAS)
