Salud wins sole gold

Maasin swimmer Christian Ivan Salud was the only sportsman from Eastern Visayas who won a gold medal at the recently concluded Palarong Pambansa in Pangasinan. Salud who is a student at the College of Maasin bagged a Gold medal in the 50 meter breast stroke competition and a Silver medal in the 100 meter breast stroke contest.

Salud was coached by Brian Morales and Jilma Maraon. Also behind Salud's winning performance were Mayor Maloney Samaco, DepEd Maasin City Division and school officials who supported his training.

Christian has been a consistent winner at the Batang Pinoy, PRISAA, EVRAA and other local swimming competitions.

National Capitol Region (NCR) dominated the event followed by Western Visayas and Southern Tagalog region.

Eastern Visayas with only 1 gold, 4 silvers, and 4 bronze medals was ranked 17th or last place.

Palarong Pambansa is the biggest annual sports event for both elementary and high school students in the country and springboard to be part of the Philippine national team. (By RONALD O. REYES)
