Sakay-Sakay Festival to set sail

December 31 - January 6, 2017

MAASIN CITY - People dressed in brightly coloured costumes while dancing gracefully to the rhythm of drums, trumpets and native gongs; a fluvial procession in honor of the Holy Child, fondly revered as Senior Santo Niño, carried aboard a beautifully adorned lead vessel; and followed by some colourful motorboats and bancas along the Maasin City seawaters.

These are picturesque scenes of the yearly tradition that enhance the spiritual beliefs and promote the natural panorama of the city’s seawaters.

The beautifully decorated motorboats and bancas will be paraded during the Sakay-Sakay Festival on January 15, early in the morning.

Among the highlights of the festival are the competitions for the Higante and Sto. Niño icon.
According to Ray John Hatayna of the City Tourism Office, the activity will have four classifications, such as: Banca, Pumpboat, Icons and Higante categories that will be open to all who are interested.

For the Banca Category: 1st prize- 40,000; 2nd prize-30,000; 3rd prize-20,000 with consolation prizes of 10,000 each. (Maximum of 5 contestants for this category.)

Pumpboat category: 1st prize- 15,000; 2nd prize-10,000; 3rd prize- 20,000 with consolation prize of 2,000 each. (Maximum of 25 contestants for this category)

Icon category: 1st prize-10,000; 2nd prize-7,000; 3rd prize-5,000 with consolation prize of 1,000 each. (Maximum of 25 contestants for this category)

Higante category: 1st prize- 12,000; 2nd prize-8,000; 3rd prize- 6,000 with consolation prize of 2,500 each. (Maximum of 10 contestants for this category.)
