SADDLE ROAD TO BE RECONSTRUCTED

PINTUYAN — The regional office of the Department of Public Works and Highways is seeking P50 million to modify the Saddle Road section of the Maharlika Highway in Pintuyan Town which is considered the most dangerous stretch of highway in Southern Leyte.

According to Southern Leyte District Engineer Carlos Veloso chances for the release of the P50 this year was good since Rolando Asis their Regional Director had visited the site himself last week and agreed it needed reconstruction ASAP.

During his visit here Engineer Veloso briefed Asis about the numerous accidents that had occurred there because of the road's steep incline and hairpin blind curves which were dangerous for motorists. He said the road network was vital to commerce and tourism because it linked the Ro-Ro Port at San Ricardo to Mindanao which was much closer to Surigao than the Lilo-an Sea Port.

Engineer Veloso is requesting the central office for P50 million to start the project but added it would take another P50 million to complete the project.

He told SLT his office had already submitted the work program for the modification of the Saddle Road Section to the central office for approval.

Veloso said the project would take 6 to 8 months to complete. (By ANTHONY KINGS)
