Saddle Road claims lives

PINTUYAN - Current records reveal that there has been fourteen people killed and 10 people seriously injured in Pintuyan town's "saddle road" since 2010.

According to DPWH Regional Director Rolando Asis there has already been numerous local and national calls to speedily improve that portion of Pintuyan's highway.

"It is important to reconstruct that road section as more and more people are passing the area since it is part of the national road that leads to the new Benit-San Ricardo roll-on roll-off ports." Director Asis said.

The DPWH regional office told newsmen that he has requested the urgent release of the P50-million funding from the National Government for the reconstruction of the accident prone road section.

The DPWH regional office has already sent the budget request including the program of work to its central office and expect its approval shortly.

The planned project will create a two-kilometer alternative road which will make the new route more "friendly" for vehicles to negotiate.

The proposed alternative road is expected to ease traffic to the town of San Ricardo which is home to one of the country's major nautical port highways. The port is now being used as the new gateway to Mindanao.

A ferry boat ride from San Ricardo to Surigao only takes 45 minutes compared to three hours boat ride from the ferry terminal in Lilo-an town.

The DPWH expects to start the road projects before the election ban starts.
