Ruby Verdict Out Soon

VILLA JACINTA, MACROHON, SOUTHERN LEYTE – The celebrated murder case of Ruby Jade Ruba of Macrohon, Southern Leyte who was killed by motorcycle riding drug addicts in Cebu City will be decided soon by Judge Ramon Daomilas of the Cebu City Trial Court.
According to Ruby’s father Victor the last court hearing was held June 10 and each party had submitted their final pleadings on which the judge will base his decision.
The accused Eivan Barabat, Karl Mark Carticiano and Anthony Gabriel have been detained at the Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center in Cebu City since their arrest two years ago. A fourth accused Maria Baswa was charged separately for violation of the anti-fencing law.
Baswa was accused of buying Ruba’s stolen cell phone from the three suspects for 3,000 pesos. Baswa later claimed she did not know the cell phone was stolen.
Ruby’s death shocked the nation and highlighted the growing lawlessness in the country’s second largest city.
Ruby Jade was due to graduate from the Cebu Doctor’s University’s School of Nursing and was looking forward to the school’s graduation ball. Her mother Margie had a special dress tailored for her for the occasion. A dress it turned out she would never get to wear because of the hoodlums who decided her fate that horrible night on March 6, 2008.
Ruby’s father told SLT that during the last hearing Vic Serna, a news man from ABS-CBN, testified that he had video taped his interview with the suspects who admitted they shot Ruby Jade after stealing her cell phone because she was shouting for help.
Serna gave a copy of the incriminating taped interview to Judge Daomilas who admitted it as evidence for the complainant in court. Vic Ruba told SLT that he had already resigned from the Coast Guard in Cebu because of the tragedy and hoped they would soon get the justice they have long waited for.
