Provincial Police on high alert

December 24 - 30, 2016

CAMP ALFREDO BANTUG – The provincial police are on “heightened alert” throughout the province as the bombing incident in nearby Hilongos town, Leyte, has spread anxiety and fear throughout Eastern Visayas.

Provincial Director Police Senior Superintendent Warren De Leon has ordered checkpoints placed in the boundary area of Bato, Leyte and Bontoc, Southern Leyte.

Another check point was placed along the Matalom, Leyte and Maasin City boundary, to secure the safety of the people from further terror attacks. The random checkpoint is inspecting buses, vans, and motorcycles.

“A checkpoint was the PNP’s way to avoid similar events that might happen in our province, especially that Hilongos is just a few towns away,” De Leon said.

Coinciding with Hilongos town’s week-long fiesta celebration, last December 28, around 9:28 in the evening, a bombing incident happened at the town’s plaza that injured some civilians. According to police reports, two improvised explosive devices exploded while another one failed to detonate.

There were thirty four (34) persons who were injured and were immediately brought to the nearest hospitals for medical treatment. No casualties were recorded.

Meanwhile, in relation to the above incident, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) - Maasin Chapter, deployed two teams to augment instant necessary medical assistance.

PRC Maasin Chapter Officer-in-Charge Jonas Maco disclosed that the two teams were focused on blood referrals and medical assistance.

Reports claimed that there were three patients confined at the Living Hope hospital in Maasin City.(By MARK L. RIMAS)
