Province gets second lowest airport allocation in Region 8

MAASIN CITY – From the whooping P2 billion worth of projects earmarked to improve airports from 2012 to 2015 in Eastern Visayas, only 2.5 percent of which went to Southern Leyte, under the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines plan for region eight.

The allocation for the province was criticized by some local leaders and businessmen as the uneven distribution of DOTC priority projects seem to have favored the "Waray" areas of the region.

The largest amount totaling P680 million is reserved for the upgrading of the Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport in Tacloban into an international airport.

Ormoc City, Leyte, got the second biggest piece of the region's airport budget with 173 million. While Catarman, Northern Samar placed third place with 172 million. Borongan, Eastern Samar, is fourth with a budget of P146.5 million, and Guiuan, Samar posted fifth with P134.5 million under its belt.

Hilongos town airport which is the nearest airstrip to Southern Leyte's Maasin City Airport is touted as a future competitor of the Maasin City Airport for the share of airline passengers who will be coming from Southern Leyte's Sogod, Bontoc, Tomas Oppus and Pacific towns, because of Hilongos town's easier access and location to these towns. The Hilongos airport project bagged more than twice than that reserved for Maasin City airport with P113.5 million.

Catbalogan and Calbayog City airports both of Samar province, bagged P94 million and P93.5 million respectively.

Meanwhile, second to the last in budget allocation with P51 million the Maasin Airport project will cover the construction of a multipurpose building, construction of security fence, apron, taxiway, administration building, and fire station building.

Lastly, the Biliran Airport in Naval province was allocated only P31.6 million for its airport project. (by Ruevivar "Wowie" Reyes)
