Province Celebrates Earth Day

Southern Leyte joined in the nation-wide Earth Day celebration last Aprill 22 with the theme “Hamon sa Panahon: Climate Change 10 Milyong Solusyon Kilos na! Ngayon na!” The celebration kicked off with an earth day caravan around the province starting from the Provincial Capitol then proceeded to Maasin City Hall and Silago. Aside from caravan there were also synchronize river and coastal clean ups in the province led by local government units.

This earth day celebration was spearheaded by the Provincial Environment and National Resource Management Office (PENRMO) headed by provincial Assistant Department Head, Pedro S. Sorio Jr. The celebration was also supported by the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) Environment and Rural Development program headed by Dr. Andreas Lange. The other agencies which participated were the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and municipal local governments..

Earth Day has been celebrated yearly in the Philippines since 2008 by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 1418 to underscore the country’s commitment and contribution to the global communities effort of promoting universal education and conservation.
