PNEUMONIA IS OUR TOP KILLER

During the first quarter of 2012 a total of 672 deaths were recorded in Southern Leyte. The top leading cause of death were pneumonia (11.0 percent), hypertension (6.1 percent), pneumonia hypostatic (5.1 percent), stroke (4.9 percent), cardiac arrest (4.6 percent), ages were 60 and over, which numbered 469 or 69.8 percent of total deaths.

Other chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (3.7 percent), heart failure congestive (3.7 percent), acute myocardial infarction (3.6 percent), respiratory tuberculosis (3.4 percent) and hypertensive heart disease without congestive heart failure (3.1 percent).

More males than females were on the death list during the three month period.

Of the total number of deaths 370 (55.1 percent) were males and only 302 (45.9 percent) were females. The highest recorded number of deaths came from among those whose ages were 60 and over, which numbered 469 or 69.8 percent of total deaths.

Males who died in this age group comprised 53.9 percent. The death rate was lowest in the age group 10- 14 with only 0.3 percent of
the total deaths that occurred in Southern Leyte during the first quarter of 2012.

During the period covered January registered the highest number of deaths in in the province with 253 deaths or an average of 8 deaths a day. While March had the least deaths with 192 or 6 deaths per day.(By MARK RIMAS)
