PhilHealth exec visits Southern Leyte

Southern Leyte (4 February) -- Without much fanfare, Philippine Health Insurance National President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Rey B. Aquino arrived in Maasin City for the continuous Universal Coverage campaign even as the province of Southern Leyte has been slated as one among the outstanding partners of the national health insurance.

Aquino was joined by Provincial Governor Damian G. Mercado, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Joselito Trumata, Maasin City Mayor Maloney Samaco, Provincial PhilHealth Officer Misael Paigan in a simple dinner at Kuting Reef Resort in Macrohon, this province last night.

In an interview with PIA-Southern Leyte, PhilHealth Provincial Officer Misael Paigan disclosed that the province of Southern Leyte has been recognized for having enrolled the greatest number of indigents to the national health insurance and has been slated to be recipient of a national award by corporation.

It was learned that the huge enrollment was accomplished due to the adequate funds appropriated by the local leaders in the province where Congressman Roger G. Mercado released some P1.7 million, Provincial Governor Damian G. Mercado also appropriated P2 million in addition to the respective funds raised by each of the eighteen municipalities and the City of Maasin local government units for the enrollment of indigents throughout the province.

However, Acting Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Nelia Gomez reported that other than the indigents, Provincial Governor Mercado directed her office to still accommodate those who wish to be enrolled in the health insurance one beneficiary from each family.

This morning, National President and CEO Aquino is scheduled to personally interact with PhilHealth members confined at the Salvacion Oppus Yniguez Memorial Provincial Hospital (SOYMPH) and interview the patients regarding their medicines, room accommodations, among other benefits that a PhilHealth member should avail.
