Only 6 pass CSC exam!

MAASIN CITY – Here’s more discouraging news on the 2009 civil service examinations where over 90 percent of the examinees failed nationwide.

According to CSC Provincial Director Nathan Eamiguel only 4 of the 114 Southern Leytenos who took the commission’s Professional Examination passed which means only 3.5 percent made it. While only 2 of the 30 who took the Sub-Professional test made the grade for an equally appalling 6.6 percent passing rate.

This average was way below the national average of 9.25 percent for professionals, and 14 percent for Sub-Professionals. The province’s performance was also much lower than the regional average which was 7.77 percent for Professional examinees and 8.7 percent for Sub-Professionals.

A DepEd official at the District Office who requested anonymity claimed the CSC examination last November was much tougher than in previous years. However CSC Chairman Francisco Duque denied this and insisted the tests were no more difficult than their standard annual examinations for aspiring public servants.

Duque added that the lower scores could be attributed to the growing number of public school teachers who were conducting their classes in the local dialect. He said since the CSC questions were in English many of the examinees could not understand them.

The chairman’s observation was echoed by parents who complained to SLT that teachers at elementary schools here were drilling their children for hours every day for the forthcoming National Achievement Test (NATS).
They said teachers were doing this because they knew their students did not comprehend English enough to understand the NATS questions.

The next Civil Service examinations in the province will be held in Maasin City on October 17, 2010.
