One So. Leyteño born every hour

50 percent born illegitimate

June 3 - 9, 2017

MAASIN CITY – For every hour that passes, one Southern Leyteño baby is born. The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) revealed this to the press based on the agency’s vital statistics for the year 2016.

The PSA records show that a total of 9,406 live births were registered in Southern Leyte province, which translated to an average of 26 babies born every day.

The statistics also showed that their were more males born than females as the number of male births (4,855) outnumbered the number of females (4,551), a sex ratio of 107 males per 100 females.

According to statistics, most of the births were registered in Maasin City at 32.5% (3,053). This was followed by Sogod with 2,027 registered births and Anahawan with 636 or 6.8%.

“The ranking can be attributed to the presence of hospitals in these municipalities where most of the births occurred,” PSA said.

On the other hand, Limasawa posted the lowest registered births of only 23 (0.2%) of the total.

Meanwhile, almost half of the total registered births in 2016 were born from unwed mothers. This data would mean that five out of ten babies were born out of wedlock.

Maasin City and the municipalities Sogod and Anahawan recorded the highest number of illegitimate children.

While Libagon has the highest number of percentage of legitimate children, tracked by the towns of Malitbog and Macrohon. Moreover, thirteen percent or a total of 1,233 registered births were delivered by young mothers aged below 18 years old.

It was reported that the month of May is the favourite month for marriage. Most couples get married in May with 294 and a daily average of 10 registered

“Riding on the fiesta occasion may be one of the factors that influenced the choice of couples to marry during this month,” the PSA concluded.(By MARK L. RIMAS)
