Oging looks to media for help

DOTC holding funds back for airport

MAASIN CITY – Representative Roger G. Mercado said in a press conference here that media had great influence and could prod development in the province.

He told participants that he needed their support so that the funding for the Panan-awan Airport and Caniwan Seaport could be released. He said an initial funding of P45 million for the extension of the Panan-awan Airport runway was already approved April 2011 but the money had not yet been released.

"We need to extend the current airport runway by 800 meters so that commercial planes can land and take off there safely. The present runway is only 1.2 kilometers long" he added.

"The alternate shipping port at Can-iwan has already secured an appropriation of P40-million but the money for the project has also not been released " Mercado said.

The proposed Can-iwan seaport is located in a cove which is protected from high waves and is much closer to Cebu and Bohol.Whereas the Maasin port is difficult for ships to reach during stormy weather.

He said these two projects were vital since in-accessibility has been a major hindrance to our development. Mercado said he had already asked DOTC Secretary Mar Roxas to fast track the release of the funds for these projects and hoped it would be released this July.
