Oarfish returns

April 8 - 14, 2017

TALISAY, LIBAGON - A huge oarfish has again beached itself in this town, the third for the last three months, as its frail body washed ashore on the beach of Libagon last April 4 in the evening.

The sighting sparked fears among local residents as the sighting of the elusive deep-water fish is believed to be an omen or signal of an earthquake.

In a photo shared by Lovella Elejorde, the oarfish was found along the shore of Barangay Talisay.

Witnesses said the oarfish was still alive and breathing when they saw it but was already weak; later on the fish died. Two fishermen who saw the oarfish estimated the fish to be at least 14.4-feet long. Local officials claimed that this is the third oarfish sighted in their municipality this year.

The Phivolcs monitored a 2.8- magnitude earthquake west of the municipality of Hinundayan last March 30 and a 2.5-magnitude earthquake east of the municipality of Pintuyan last March 31.

Marine biologists believe that the deep-sea fish is capable of sensing seismic tremors on the earth's crust.(By MARK L. RIMAS)
