Noynoy Impressed with Mercado's Log Ban Law

MANILA – DENR Secretary Ramon Paje has announced that President Benigno Aquino wants to end his term as president by leaving a law that would permanently implement a total log in the  country.

Paje said that the President’s Executive Order 23 which he signed last February ordered an indefinite ban on logging in natural forests throughout the country,  But that a national law was needed if the country is determined to ban logging nationwide and  minimize mega flash floods in the country.

He said similar bills that were proposed by Malacañang in the past have not passed congress and added that “Maganda sana, kung makukumbinsi o tutulong ang Kongreso ipasa nila yang priority bill ng presidente para mayroong continuity at walang backsliding.”

Paje said he hoped that Republic Act 9772 which was authored by Congressman Roger Mercado which imposed a total log ban in natural forests in Southern Leyte was being strictly implemented by the Provincial Government through the Provincial PNP.

He emphasized that the Local Log Ban Law authored by Mercado should be emulated nationwide so we can prevent killer flashfloods like the ones that ravaged Cagayan De Oro and Iligan City. He said he was confident both houses of Congress will be more supportive of the administration’s anti-illegal logging efforts in light of the recent disasters that had ravaged the country.
