NPA desperate says AFP

TACLOBAN CITY – In response to the New Peoples Army recent statement that it is has been recruiting in Eastern Visayas and called the Armed Forces of the Philippines as “daydreaming” for declaring Southern Leyte, Leyte and parts of Samar as “Insurgency Free”, the military countered the rebels claim by saying “The NPA in Eastern Visayas is desperate and having nightmares on their downfall.”

Major General Mario Chan the commander of the region’s army division further said that “Yes, the army is daydreaming of long peace and prosperity in the region.”

“For almost a decade, the provinces of Southern Leyte and Leyte are starting to feel development and economic growth after the CPP-NPA-NDF influence in the area had declined.”

Major General Chan likewise denied the contention of EMC Spokesperson that the army is using tactics to sway civilians to attend meetings the army initiated. He considered it as a very insane and preposterous. He humbly acknowledged that government forces have no funds to buy lechon and other similar lavish food preparations just to sway the communities on their favor.

On the contrary, he claimed that local communities have joined the meetings with the army in every barangay because they believed that they are the real people whom they can depend on.

Chan further said that government soldiers were not asking food from the local communities in remote areas as what he claims the NPAs are doing.

Moreover, to answer the alleged human rights violations done by the military as said by the NPA spokesperson, Major General Chan challenged rebels by saying. “We challenge the NPA! If they can show any proof that government troops committed violations on Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law in our area of operations during my time as Division Commander, then we will prosecute those soldiers to the point of putting them in jail and discharging them from the service.
We challenge the NPA to show proof. Do not keep on claiming and throwing accusations without basis. If you cannot respond to these challenges, then that would be tantamount to a conclusion that your statements are merely propaganda designed to poison the minds of the innocent civilians.

The heated exchange of words between the government and the communist rebels came after the NPA’s Eastern Visayas spokesman; Ka Karlos Manuel of the NPA’s Efren Martirez Command announced to the regional press that the rebels have allegedly been able to recruit 500 new NPA soldiers throughout Eastern Visayas.(By: ANGELYN BOOK)
