May 8 was hottest day

PACU, MAASIN CITY - According to weather forecaster Aldrin Kaindoy of Pagasa the hottest day of the year in Southern Leyte was recorded on May 8 when the temperature rose to 35.5 degrees Celsius.

Last April the highest temperature recorded here was 34.8 degrees Celsius. Kaindoy said the reason for the heat wave is that its summer and its hotter than usual because of the El Nino phenomenon.

The hottest day if the year was recorded in the province of Cagayan where the temperature reached a staggering 39 degrees Celsius.

He said Filipinos are used to very hot weather and usually take precautions during heat waves by seeking shelter from the sun and drinking plenty of liquids. Europeans are not so fortunate and the last heat wave that hit France, Spain and Italy in 2006 killed over 60,000 people, mostly senior citizens, who were trapped inside their oven-hot apartments.
