Maasin coastal road starts 2017

February 18 - 24, 2017

MAASIN CITY - Considering the city’s development and increased volume of traffic, the Department of Public Works and Highways – Southern Leyte District Engineering Office (DPWH) will construct a 4.71 km-long coastal bypass road, with reclamation component, connecting the villages of Lib-og to Mambajao.

The bypass road or new “Coastal Road” is meant to ease traffic congestion, particularly the main streets of Ruperto Kangleon and Tomas Oppus.

The road is an alternative link that will connect the city’s commercial center to barangays Lib-og, Combado, Tunga-Tunga, Abgao, Mantahan and Mambajao.

In a phone interview, District Engineer Ma. Margarita Junia said that the design linking the bypass coastal road is being done by consultants.

The planned road, which will cost P1.5 billion pesos in 6 years, will get a preliminary budget of P50 million this year (2017) for the construction of the initial road and slope protection.

Maasin Mayor Nacional Mercado, in an interview, said that the project is also in preparation for the future as the city streets are now getting busier with vehicular traffic.

DPWH Planning section Chief Vincent Sy disclosed to SLT that the proposed budget for the project next year (2018) is P200 million.

Sy, in addition, said that releases in the next years will mainly depend on the outcome of feasibility study, which will be completed within the first half of each year.

The project is also in compliance with DPWH Secretary Mark Villar’s directive to all engineering districts to decongest traffic through the construction of bypass roads in populated areas. (BY DAHLIA A. ORIT)
