MAASIN CITY'S ANJONAY FIESTA

Civic organizations and the city government are planning to launch the city's newest and largest festival. The annual even which will be called the "Ajonay Festival" will showcase Maasin's unique culture and heritage.

Since it became a city Maasinhons have dreamed of having its own grand festival which would rival the festival celebrations of Cebu and Bohol cities. Hence during a tourism workshop held at the Supercha 2 Restaurant last April 12 and 13 the participants unanimously agreed to name the proposed annual event as the "AJONAY FESTIVAL" and to hold it during the month of August.

To most Maasinhons the word "Ajonay" means a call for cooperation by the community to realize community goals. This call for "Ajonay" signifies the Bayanihan spirit where every member of the community helps each other.

Ajonay is also practiced and used during weddings, funerals and in times when persons in a community are in need of assistance.
The "Ajonay Festival" which will be partially funded by the city government will become a private undertaking in the near future.(By MARK RIMAS)
