Lightning Torches House

BARANGAY MARIA CLARA, MAASIN CITY - A house in Barangay Pacu was obliterated last week when it was struct by a lightning. The wooden house which was owned by Cristopher Plateros was burned to the ground and so were the three coconut trees around it.

The freak incident also triggered a blackout in the neighborhood.

Irrational fear of lightning and thunder is called astraphobia. The study or science of lightning is called fulminology and someone who studies lightning is referred to as a fulminologist.

Around 100 people die each year from lightning strikes and an estimated 500 are seriously injured by it. Forty percent of these incidents are unreported and only three percent occurred inside buildings.

The most bizarre lightning incident ever reported happened in Croatia in 2007 when a motorbike rider’s penis was struck by a lightning while he was taking a piss along the road. Doctors claim the victim’s rubber shoes and clothing saved his life.

The victim Ante Djindic has since recovered and so has his manhood which though slightly burned had suffered no lingering defects. Djindic who had since immigrated to the United States has become quite a celebrity there. (By ANGIE BOOK)
