Landslide and floods threaten Southern Leyte

If reports from the Civil Defense Office in Tacloban is true then Southern Leyte is “the most landslide prone area in Eastern Visayas.”

For according to Director Angel Gaviola of the Civil Defense Office all the 18 municipalities and Maasin city are prone to landslides. He said of its 497 barangays, only 28 were not threatened by landslides.

He added that the 9 towns of Silago, Hinunangan, Cabalian, Saint Bernard, San Francisco, Sogod, Bontoc, Malitbog, Macrohon and Maasin City were also prone to flash floods.

“Seventeen of Southern Leyte’s 18 municipalities,” he warned “are prone to earthquakes with the lone exception of Macrohon town, but that only San Juan was threatened with volcanic eruption.

All the coastal areas in Panaon Island and the Pacific Towns, he claimed, were vulnerable to tidal waves. He said it was important for all Disaster Coordinating Councils to know the hazards in their areas so they can prepare for them.
