Illigitimate births rising

MAASIN CITY - The National Statistics Office revealed that of the 1,507 babies born in Southern Leyte during the first quarter of 2012, about one-half or 50 percent were conceived out of wedlock compared to the same period the previous
year. During the same quarter last year illegitimate births exceeded legitimate births by one percent.

The month of January 2012 recorded the highest number of illegitimate births at 311 or 20.7 percent of the total births during the period. More male births during the first quarter of 2012 were illegitimate (429 or 57.0 percent) than the females (324 or 43.0 percent).

17 babies born each day A total of 1,507 live births were reported in Southern Leyte during the first quarter of 2012 or an average of 17 babies born each day.

This figure noted a 6.5 percent decrease from the 1,612 live births during the same period the previous year.

More males died in Southern Leyte during the first quarter of 2012 (827 or 54.9 percent) than females (680 or 45.1 percent) were reported to have been born.

Thus resulting to a birth sex ratio of 122 males to every 100 females. Most birth deliveries were medically attended In Southern Leyte, mothers' concern for healthy pregnancy was clearly reflected as most births were attended by a qualified medical staff.

Almost 8 out of 10 mothers (79.6 percent) who gave birth during the first quarter of 2012 were treated by qualified and trained medical practitioners such as physicians, nurses and midwives.

The biggest proportions of births were attended by physician at 61.5 percent. Other attendants such as "hilot "also assisted in the birth of 307 babies or 20.4 percent.

The peak age for giving birth in Southern Leyte for the first quarter of 2012 was between ages 20- 24 which accounted for 28.9 percent of total births. Teenage mothers contributed 12.9 percent or 194 births. While the non-fertile age group of 50 years and over accounted for 0.07 percent of the total. (by RUEVIVAR "WOWIE" REYES)
