HIV Cases Rising

TACLOBAN CITY- Health authorities in Eastern Visayas are alarmed by the steady increase in the number of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV)which causes the deadly Acquired Immunity Deficiency Syndrome or AIDS.

According to Frederick Boyd Cerro region 8 now has had 35 HIV positive cases since they started monitoring the virus. Most victims he said were infected through unprotected sexual contact.

The national statistics however seem to refute Cerro’s figures because it showed that one Filipino every hour is infected with HIV or 24 Filipinos daily nationwide.

Cerro admitted that DOH officials consider the number of infections “high” and were alarmed about it. He added that those infected were between the ages of 19 to 41.

He said the DOH regional office will be conducting consultative workshops with the Department of Interior and Local Government and the Department of Social welfare and Development to strengthen their information campaign against HIV. The campaign includes the distribution of HIV test kits, medication and medical paraphernalia to various health centers of the province. (By NOEME MONTALBO)
