Gonzales is first local “Doctor to the Barrios”

June 3 - 9, 2017

MAASIN CITY - Coming from a family of engineers, 26-year-old Lesgard John Gonzales, from Maasin City, still pursued his passion of becoming a doctor.

Gonzales is the first Southern Leyteño scholar who succesfully hurdled his medical studies in Cebu Doctor’s University, College of Medicine, and is among the provincial government’s medical scholars under the LGU’s medical scholarship program.

He is the son of Engr. Lesgard Garde Gonzales and Bienvinida Beto Gonzales.

The province’s medical scholarship includes grants, monthly stipends, board and lodging expenses, transportation, uniform and book allowances.

The medical scholarship is given on the condition that after graduation, the state- funded scholars would first serve in Southern Leyte’s public hospitals for a given time. The scholars, together with their parents, are obliged to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) stipulating the term of years of local hospital service.

Hospital Enterprise Board (HEB) Member Sil Toledo told SLT that the HEB is inviting more scholars to take up medicine courses to address the shortage of doctors treating patients at local government hospitals.

The scholarship program aims to produce home-grown doctors to cater to the need for government physicians at the Salvacion Oppus Yñiguez Memorial Provincial Hospital (SOYMPH) and other district hospitals in the different towns of the province.(By MARK L. RIMAS)
