Gibo plans Southern Leyte-Surigao Bridge

METRO MANILA - Alarmed by the rising number of maritme disasters in the country,; presidential candidate Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has proposed building bridges and submarine tunnels to replace the ancient Ro-Ro vessels that connect the country’s main islands.

We must modernize our infrastructures under a national development plan that will link the main islands through a modern network of bridges and tunnels said Teodoro who is the standard-bearer of the ruling Lakas-Kampi-CMD party.

“Hongkong has it. Malaysia has it. Why can’t we?” Teodoro asked Makati businessmen stressing the need for a modern transportation network.

Teodoro said the series of fatal accidents involving wooden-hulled passenger vessels was proof that public transport in the Philippines is due for a major overhaul.

He said modern tunnels and bridges could link Bohol and Cebu and Southern Leyte with resource rich Mindanao.

He cited the San Juanico Bridge, a Compression arch structure stretching from Samar to Leyte, traversing the shark infested and treacherous San Juanico Strait.

It is the longest bridge in the Philippines and is supported by 43 spans rising 41 meters above the sea with a large arch beneath that allows large ships to pass.

Teodoro said he envisions a modern national road infrastructure and communications network that would hasten economic development and strengthen the government’s efforts to fight poverty.

Teodoro, who lags behind Senators Manny Villar and Nonoy Aquino, said he was confident the Filipino people would eventually chose him as its next president. (By RUEVIVAR REYES)
