Farmers Slam Quarrying

SOGOD, SOUTHERN LEYTE – Rice farmers along the river banks of the once mighty Subang Daku River have complained to SLT about the excessive quarrying of the river which they claim have eroded their rice fields and cut-off their access to their irrigation source.

They claim that the water from the river which they used to irrigate their rice fields is now too far from the river bank and they can’t divert it because the water is now too shallow because of the massive quarrying for aggregates in the entire river area.

They said they had reported their plight to their barangay officials but nothing has been done about their situation, since the ones quarrying the river are the public officials who are supposed to protect the Subang Daku River which is the largest source of fresh water in the province.

“Even the Save Subang Daku River organization is silent about its over quarrying because they are now employed by the local governments,” they lamented. One of them, they claimed who promised that blood would flow if our aggregates were exported to Cebu is now a department head in a local government unit. (By ANTHONY KINGS)
