Extended registration nets 660 new voters for Southern Leyte

Maasin City (January 6) -- A total of 660 fresh entrants to the electoral right of suffrage showed up for the eighteen towns and one city of the province during the five-day extended voters listing last month.

The special registration by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) was made in accordance to a Supreme Court ruling favoring the extension of the list-up which the poll body held only last October 31 as its deadline.

Based on records at the COMELEC provincial office here, the re-opening of registration on December 21, 22, 23, 28 and 29 yielded the following results per local government unit (LGU), arranged from highest to lowest for easy, comparative appreciation.

Maasin City - 118; Sogod - 68; Macrohon - 59; Hinunangan - 44; Bontoc - 43; Hinundayan and Saint Bernard - 42 each; Liloan - 39; Silago - 35; San Francisco and San Juan - 29 each; Libagon - 21; Malitbog - 19; Tomas Oppus - 17; Anahawan - 16; Limasawa - 14; San Ricardo - 9; Pintuyan - 8; and Padre Burgos - 7.

The additional number has brought to 248,258 the total registered voters for Southern Leyte province who are expected to cast their votes on May 10 synchronized and automated local, national elections.

During the last balloting in 2007, particularly for the barangay elections, there were 235,639 total registered voters for the entire province, an increase this time of some 12,619 new voters, or roughly 5%.

For Maasin City, the total number of registered voters including the extended list-up is 50,213. (By Bong Pedalino PIA-Southern Leyte)
