“Engkwentro” Boxing at the Garden

MAASIN CITY - In line with the province’s 57th Founding Anniversary, an inter-town 2-day boxing tournament was held last Wednesday and Thursday evening at the Sunken Garden, Capitol Site.

The tournament had four categories that included: Kids, School Boys, Junior Boys and Elite levels.

For Kids Category (Engkwentro), Regor Marilao from Mambajao, Maasin City and Rachel Anduyan of Abgao, Maasin City were hailed as winners by unanimous decision after thrashing down Asuncion’s pride Jemar Japos and Omar Bandibas, respectively. A decision was also made in favour of Jessie Christian Ramos after the referee stopped the contest (RSC) against his opponent Francis Alabat of Tunga-tunga, Maasin City.

For School Boys Category Inter-town Tournament, a split decision was made by the judges on the bouts of Andrusty Undras of Hindang against Ormocanon Jonel Diomampo, and Maasinhon Jhayve Donaire against Gene Gozo of Hilongos, Leyte.

A unanimous decision was won by 42 kg Harold James Refonte against his opponent Michael Angelo Siega from Maasin City.

Meanwhile, Lemuel Dagodog of Padre Burgos outboxed and crushed Juniel Olinares from Ormoc City.

In Junior Boys Category, Ian Lloyd Gesalan won against Janrel Capistrano, both from Maasin City. Meanwhile, Ormocanon James Castro dominated the boxing square and defeated 46-kg Narciso Rodriguez.

In the elite category, Rico Pepito, from Ormoc City, showed off his boxing skills and overpowered his opponent Chrostopher Castro prompting the referee to end the match.(By MARK L. RIMAS)
