East Visayas LGU commemorates 113th anniversary of Rizal’s martyrdom

Tacloban City (December 31) -- The various Local Government Units in Eastern Visayas yesterday joined the nationwide flag-raising and wreath laying activities to commemorate the 113th anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal.

The main event in Eastern Visayas was conducted at the city of Tacloban where at the Plaza Trece de Deciembre, OIC Mayor Carlos Cordero, the Sangguniang Panlungsod and the Philippine National Police conducted flag-raising, wreath-laying and a short commemorative program.

The event was also participated in by the heads of the national government agencies, barangay officials and by representatives of non-government organizations.

The new city of Baybay in Leyte also celebrated the historic event through a simple but meaningful flag-raising, wreath-laying and short commemorative program.

Local government units in the province of Leyte also joined in the simultaneous flag-raising and wreath laying ceremonies, Mayor Roque Tiu, the League of Municipalities Leyte Chapter president, informed.

The Philippine Information Agency as early as two weeks ago has been deluged with queries, mostly from Leyte Local Government Units, regarding the theme, the suggested activities, the number of anniversary celebration which have been conducted so far, among others.

Aside from Tanauan, Mayor Loreto Yu of Alang-alang, Mayor Hilario Caadan of Tolosa; Palompon Mayor Eulogio Tupa, were among the first to inform PIA about their flagraising and wreath laying rites which they themselves led, together with the municipal officials and the barangay chairmen and officials.

In Eastern Samar, Guiuan Mayor Analiza Yu was the first to give feedback on the successful Rizal Day commemoration participated by the municipal officials and barangay officials.

The first to respond to the PIA inquiry in the province of Samar was Basey Mayor Wilfredo Estorninos who said that the Rizal Day commemoration in his municipality was attended by the municipal officials and heads of other government agencies.

Meanwhile, in Southern Leyte, Mayor Shirlita Chong informed that her municipality also participated in the nationwide commemoration of the Day of the National Hero.

PIA Southern Leyte reported that City of Maasin Vice Mayor Effie Sabandal led the commemorative rites for the 13th anniversary of Rizal’s Martyrdom.

The Department of Interior and Local Government has issued DILG Memorandum Circular No. 2009-183 dated December 18, 2009, directing all local government executives to commemorate the 113th anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal through flag-raising and wreath laying rites.
