April 29 - May 5, 2017

Last week, at least nine fishermen, one of whom is a minor, were arrested by local authorities in the towns of Libagon, Liloan and Padre Burgos due to illegal fishing activities in various parts of the provinces’ sea waters.

Ernesto Paler y Pipe, Jolito Bosque y Ligtas, Charlie Bernadet y Maximo, Edgar Riveral y Orcales, Alejo Riveral y Orcales, Michael Gono, Junriel Gono, Vicotriano Garzon and Emman Go (not his real name) were among those who were apprehended after they were allegedly caught in the act of illegal fishing.

Paler, Bosque and Bernadet, all from Tomas Oppus, Southern Leyte were caught in Libagon town last December 19, after reportedly failing to show a permit to operate and trawl the seawaters of Libagon.

Meanwhile, brothers Edgar and Alejo Orcales and the rest were nabbed in the towns of Padre Burgos and Liloan after allegedly being caught red-handed using illegal method of catching fish.

The raiding team arrested the fishing crew and seized the motorboats containing 20 kilos of assorted kinds of fish and various fishing paraphernalia.

The year-end campaign against illegal fishing in the province’s coastal waters has been stepped up to help stop all kinds of illegal fishing activities in local waters.(By MARK L. RIMAS)
