Don't Use Our Name!

MAASIN CITY - Here’s one for Ripley’s Believe it or Not. The publisher of the Southern Leyte Balita a weekly newspaper here has taken its rival Leyte Balita to court for allegedly usurping its name.

Included in its complaint to the Regional Trial Court in Maasin was the Department of Trade and Industry’s Provincial Director Mike Nunez who the complainant Ping Baybay said had approved the Leyte Balita name illegally.

According to Nunez the complainant believed he had acted in bad faith when he approved Edito Mapayo’s (the owner of Leyte Balita) request for clerance to use of the name Leyte Balita. We tried to contact Mapayo for his comments on the complaint but no one answered the telephone and an office worker nearby claimed they had closed shop.
