Dengue Kills 37 in Eastern Visayas

TACLOBAN CITY – Thirty seven people in Eastern Visayas have died from dengue fever in 2010 according to the Department of Health Regional Office in Tacloban.

A total of 3,862 cases of dengue fever were reported in Eastern Visayas from January to July 2010 reports Boyd Cerro of the DOH Region 8 Office. The largest number of cases reported were in Tacloban City which had a total of 1,014 cases.

Although local health authorities admitted that they were alarmed over the increase in dengue deaths in the Region they assured residents there iwas no reason to declare a dengue outbreak.

There were 89 dengue cases reported in Southern Leyte. Of this number only one fatality was reported in Anahawan compared to the 54 deaths in Eastern Visayas.

The DOH has issued a dengue alert to all health officers in the Region because of the onset of the rainy season.
Cerro said that health workers have also been ordered to remind people of the dengue problem and the need to monitor the breeding places of dengue mosquitos.(By: MARK RIMAS)
