Death on yacht panics tourists

PANAON ISLAND – The sudden death of the first mate on the cruise yacht M/V Hans Christian Andersen sowed panic among its 24 foreign passengers who were on their way to Siargao island in Surigao.

Cruise supervisor Rhodel Axalan told Coast Guardsman Juan Ventolero in Maasin that Remegio Redulla Remoreras had suddenly started vomiting blood last Thursday and had  died off Panaon Island.

The incident which occurred in plain sight of the cruise yachts passengers had frightened the tourists on board who thought he may have died from food poisoning.

They later brought Remoreras body to Palo, Leyte to have it autopsied and learned he had died from a massive heart attack. The doctor who performed the autopsy ruled out foul play.

Remoreras who is from Santa Rosa Laguna was 49 years old. The cruise yacht had come from Cebu and was on its way to Surigao’s Siargao Island which is a popular  surfing site. (By ANGELYN BOOK)
