Death ends Chinaman’s dream

BARANGAY LIBHU, MAASIN CITY – Like most couples nowadays Maritess Baring and Kwok Che Fung (a Chinese national) met through the internet. It was his third visit here since they met and were married in 2009.
According to Maritess’s relative, who asked not to be quoted, since one of the suspects was still there because a warrant for his arrest had not yet been issued. She said Kwok Che Fung had decided to retire here and was looking for a place to build their dream house when he was murdered and later found buried in a shallow grave in Sitio Cantimog.

Although neighbors there suspected he had been murdered and who the suspects were, no one had reported the incident to the police  because they feared the suspects who were known trouble makers in the community.  Operatives (SOCO) and Police superintendent Elmedio Tagra questioned Joenard Mangmang Jr. the former live-in partner of the victim’s wife. Mangmang under interrogation led them to the shallow grave where Fung was buried.

Although the suspect admitted he was present when Fung was bludgeoned to death he said the actual killer was his friend Marlon Preno. He said they only intended to rob Fung and that Marlon had killed him when he resisted.

As of this writing Preno has reportedly fled the province (for God knows where) because the case is still at one of the city prosecutor’s desk and hasn’t been endorsed to the Regional Trial Court which would then issue the warrants of arrest.

The only thing certain at this point in time is that the judicial process grinds agonizingly slow in the Banana Republic of the Philippines. (By ANTHONY KINGS)
