Dead baby found in cemetary

MANTAHAN, MAASIN CITY – A resident while walking along  Tomas Oppus road in Mantahan on his way to the Mambajao  public cemetery was shocked when he saw a stray dog biting into and dragging away a dead newly born baby girl.

According to 24 year old Ronelio “Titing” Udtohan Sumudlayon he got scared and ran to his neighbors and nearby people to tell them what he saw.

According to City Police Chief Hector Enage the mother of the child, Rose Ann Mendoza Erlandez,  an 18 year old resident of Hilongos Leyte, was visiting a relative in Mantahan when she began having labor pains and eventually delivered the baby in the comfort room.

She claimed the baby was already dead when she gave birth and decided to bury her because she had no money for the dead baby’s burial.

Investigators told the Southern Leyte Times that Erlandez had dug her baby’s grave with her bare hands.

Since the grave was only 12 inches deep a stray dog was easily able to dig it out the body and dragged it towards a secluded area of the cemetery to eat it, when it was spotted by Sumudlayon.

City Police officers say that the dead baby’s mother will be charged of violating  the Health and Sanitation Code of the Philippines for illegally disposal of a dead person. (By ANGELYN BOOK)
