DPWH sets groundbreaking for new bridge in Sogod

Maasin City (2 February) -- It is all systems go for the construction of a new infrastructure project in Sogod town that would lessen travel time for passengers going to the pacific and Panaon areas of Southern Leyte province.

District Engineer (DE) Carlos Veloso of the Department of Public Works and Highways -- Southern Leyte Engineering District (DPWH-SLED) disclosed in an informal interview last week that a groundbreaking ceremony for a new bridge crossing in what used to be an old road for vehicles has been scheduled to be held on Friday, February 5.

An initial amount of P 40 Million was already available this year to start work on the bridge project out of a total cost of P 140 Million, DE Veloso told PIA.

He said considerations on the technical design for the project took into account, among others, the maximum level of the meandering Subang Daku, especially its rampaging flow during stormy weather.

It was on such times, in inclement weather in the past, that the turbulent river became impassable, prompting commuters to use the alternate road, now fully concreted, by the sides of the river, albeit a longer distance for pacific and Panaon-bound passengers.

The new bridge will be about 360 meters long in length, a distance secure and safe enough to reach the other side of the river?s bank, in the barangay Concepcion area, and vice-versa.

DE Veloso did not say if there will be visitors from the DPWH higher-ups who would attend the groundbreaking rites, but provincial officials led by Cong. Roger Mercado and Gov. Damian Mercado will be around, together with Sogod town officials led by Mayor Sheffered Tan. (By Bong Pedalino PIA-Southern Leyte)
