Cyber crimes rising
“Oplan Mega Shopper” nabs 2 suspects

MAASIN CITY – The information age has dramatically improved communication and has made life much easier for most people, but with this easy access to information, a darker side of this era has risen in the guise of cyber crimes.

The Southern Leyte Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in its campaign against Cyber Crimes recently conducted a police operation code named “Oplan Mega Shopper.” Telecommunications giant Globe Telecom corporation’s Gerald Bechayda had filed a complaint with the CIDG in Sogod on the proliferation of hacking operations on the Globe Tattoo Stick Internet.

According to Bechayda the suspected hackers would install a Virtual Private Network to an existing customer’s personal computer and sell the illegally connected internet access to unsuspecting users for a cheap price. The buyers would then have unlimited access to Globe Telecom’s internet service for up to 30 days.

Two alleged violators of the “Access Devices Regulation Act of 1998” were recently arrested at the city’s Jollibee fast food restaurant.  Police identified the suspects as Aileen Ibalarrosa Salas and Clarke Louie Telen both students of Saint Joseph College and residents of Barangay Mantahan, Maasin City.

Any violators of Section 10 of the above law could be fined P10,000 and imprisoned for more than 6 years. (By WOWIE REYES)
