No Way To Treat Christmas

Antonio M. Reyes

By Antonio M. Reyes

There was a time, not too long ago, when Barangay Mambajao was a model community known for its effective though low-keyed leadership.
But what was once a quiet and pleasant place has now become one of the city’s nosiest neighborhoods with motorcycle shops selling engine mufflers that sound like Tsunamis. There are even saw mills now along the Ruperto Kangleon national road fronting the SLT editorial office. We wrote about these establishments a year ago but they’re still there and depriving the residents of their well earned afternoon naps.
Last Christmas the Barangay Council, for some strange reason, decided to keep the entire community awake during the Christmas holidays with eardrum-piercing disco-music which lasted from dawn to dusk. And on the 24th and 25th of December they kept the “music” and flashing disco lights on till six in the morning; until a drowsy street sweeper mercifully turned them off.
Instead of spending tax payer’s money on such opulent affairs why don’t our barangay officials just enforce the laws which already exist; like banning the construction of squatter shanties along the Canturing river’s break water. Or closing down fire hazards like the shop across our street which has stockpiled its nipa housing materials smack against Engineer Jess Quilantang’s perimeter fence.
Although we respect our local leaders who we depend on for our safety. We do expect them to set a higher standard of performance for themselves. They could start by junking these noisy and expensive annual extravaganzas and focusing their energies on ventures that will make Barangay Mambajao a better (and more quiet) place to live in.
We are sure our lord Jesus would agree.
