Coconut replanting project launched in Macrohon town

MACROHON – The Philippine Coconut Authority and Provincial Government will soon start a replanting program in a 3,500 hectare land to help revive the coconut industry here.

PCA Regional Manager Edilberto Nierva said the provincial government would establish and maintain the nurseries while PCA will provide the planting materials. He stressed the need for the project because Southern Leyte had too many coconut trees which were
over 60 years old and were no longer productive The project will adopt the participatory and reward system where farmers will receive P5 for every seed nut grown in the farmer's own seedbed. Another P5 will be given for every seedling which is at least two feet high and P20 for every transplanted healthy seedling three feet high. (By MARK RIMAS)
