City Breakwater to be built

MAASIN CITY - Maasinhons know that when the monsoon season strikes much of the newly converted national road, Tomas Oppus Street would be inundated by sea water. The same situation occurs during typhoons.

The first infrastructure that would absorb the damaging impact of sea waves is our aging riprap dikes. Over the past few years the intensity of these waves has been increasing due to increasing sea level brought about by climate change due to global warming, “Habagat” or Southwest Monsoon” is creating problems and is now threatening lives and properties along our coastlines.

One of the mandates of the Department of Public Works and Highways as the premiere construction arm of the national government is to provide safe infrastructures for the people not just through roads and bridges, but through other infrastructures that mitigates the impact of natural and man made disasters.

The DPWH-SLED has been conducting studies on the impact of the southwest monsoon on the coastal area of the city and has concluded that the force of sea wave is now increasing and the first line of defense now which is our grouted riprap dike will ultimately be destroyed if the force of sea waves will not be restricted before it hits the dike shore protection.

The TETRAPOD breakwater is now being readied for the multi-year project of Congressman Roger G. Mercado for the Maasin seawall. When completed this modern breakwater will also raise the value of real property along the city’s coastline. (By MANOLO ROJAS)
